I read the books Abuela, Knock Knock My Dad’s Dream For Me, and Tacky the Penguin. Abuela offered me a mirror because I am latina and I could relate to all the places they went to. Knock Knock My Dad’s Dream for Me offered me a window to that person’s story. I could understand what that person was going through. Tacky the Penguin offered me a window to the penguin’s life. Tacky didn’t care what other people thought of her. Abuela let me see some representation of my culture. Knock Knock My Dad’s Dream For Me impacted me because it reminded me that parents have big dreams for their kids and they wish the best for them. Tacky the Penguin impacted me because it just reminded me to just be yourself. These books leave an impact because they talk about problems that aren’t talked about a lot. They are diverse books. “About WNDB.” We Need Diverse Books, 19 Nov. 2019, diversebooks.org/about-wndb/. Beaty, Daniel, and Bryan Collier. Knock Knock: My Dad's Dream for Me. Little, Brown and Company, 2014. Dorros, Arthur, and Elisa Kleven. Abuela. Dutton Children's Books, 1991. Lester, Helen. Tacky the Penguin. Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority Resource Centre for the Visually Impaired, 2010. I understand why some books are banned. I don’t agree with the banning of books or the burning of books. I understand that some books go against some people’s beliefs but not everyone has the same beliefs. The book I chose is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The book is banned because “it was deemed “anti-cop,” and for [the use of] profanity, drug use, and sexual references” (Admin). I don’t agree with it. The book does deal with social issues like police brutally. It is trying to showcase how it affects not just the people involved but the community too. Some articles like THE HATE U GIVE BANNED BY KATY, TEXAS SCHOOL DISTRICT state that the school has banned it for the use of the N word. Libraries should defend books. Libraries shouldn’t ban books. In the Library Bill of Rights it states that people should be able to read whatever they wish to read no matter what other people say.
